Save a Copay® Program

Another way to save on certain generic medications.

You already know that using generic medications saves you money. That’s because you pay your health plan’s lowest copay when your doctor prescribes generics instead of brand-name drugs.

Now there’s yet another way to save on certain generics. It’s the Save a Copay program.
Here’s how it works:

  • There’s no need to enroll. Aetna will contact you directly if you or an enrolled dependent are eligible to participate in the program.
  • Check the chart below and talk to your doctor. If you are taking the brand-name version of any drug shown in the chart below, ask your doctor about switching to the generic equivalent drug.
  • Pay no copay for six months. If your doctor prescribes the generic drug, your copay will be waived for six months from the last day you received the brand-name drug.
  • Pay the lowest copay after that.  After the end of the six-month period, you’ll pay the lowest copay for your generic medication.
  • Use retail or mail service pharmacy. Save a Copay applies to prescriptions filled at participating retail pharmacies or through your plan’s mail order service.

With Save a Copay, you’ll pay nothing for your generic medication for six months after you switch from your brand-name drug. Plus, after that, you’ll save the difference between the generic copay and the non-preferred brand-name copay. There are two ways to save. See the chart below and contact your doctor to find out if the generic equivalent is right for you. As always, you and your doctor should discuss any medication change to make sure it’s safe and appropriate.

Brand-Name Medication*

Generic Equivalent

Lipitor 10 mg
Lipitor 20 mg
Lipitor 40 mg
Crestor 5 mg
Vytorin 10/10

Simvastatin, pravastatin or lovastatin

Lexapro
Paxil CR

Citalopram
Paroxetine

* Note: The Save a Copay program only applies to the Brand-Name Medications shown in this chart.

If your medication isn’t listed above, you may still be able to save with generics if you’re currently taking a brand-name medication. Just check the Preferred Drug List for your brand-name medication. If it’s listed, you’ll see the name(s) of the generic(s) that can be substituted. You can then ask your doctor about switching to the generic drug. You won’t get six months copay-free, but you’ll pay the lowest copay and save over the cost of the brand-name drug.
