Precertification*
Precertification is a review required for certain medications before benefits are paid. Precertification usually applies to drugs that:

  • Are likely to be taken inappropriately and/or for too long
  • Should be prescribed only for certain conditions
  • Tend to be more expensive than other medications proven to be just as effective.

Step-Therapy*
Step-therapy requires one or more prerequisite, clinically equivalent drugs (in many cases less expensive) to be tried before a step-therapy drug will be covered. If a specific step-therapy drug is medically necessary, your physician can contact Aetna to request coverage without a trial of the prerequisite drug(s).

Quantity Limits*
Precertification is required for an additional amount of medication in excess of doses recommended by the manufacturer.

*Medications on the Precertification, Step-Therapy, and Quantity Limits lists are subject to change in accordance with applicable state law.
